Is it OK to Keep Mementos of Old Flames?

By Tim Phillips | August 15, 2010

One could face quite a few problems by preserving mementos of old flames, although there is nothing wrong as such. Some of your old flames might have become good friends to you and you might have some sweet memories associated with ex-boyfriends or girlfriends and want to cherish or keep the gifts or cards you shared with them. It is absolutely fine if you are preserving the mementos, as they could be a part of nostalgic memories or as a remembrance of your first puppy love.

But the other side of the coin that is the factual or the bitter truth of clinging to the mementos given by you ex-flames could bother in your present or future relationships. No guy or girl would want their partners to live in the past or giving so much importance in holding on to souvenirs gifted by past girl/boyfriends.

Some of the possible problem you might face by keeping the mementos of old flames
The most obvious and probable problem of preserving old flames’ mementos is it could ruin your present relationship. Especially if you are hiding it from your respective boyfriend or girlfriend and one fine day they discovering it could just cause severe misunderstanding.

It will be like skeletons in the closet that could put you in trouble for no reason at all. And even if you disclose the truth to your present partner it might still not do any good, as most of them would get jealous, insecure or their trust in you will be shaken completely. There are very few lucky people with partners who understand the sentimental value attached to the mementos attached to old flames but it is very rare that you find such partners.

The other problems could be…
Whenever you turn and look at the mementos of your past flames, it would remind of the past, bringing good or bad memories of the relationship that makes it difficult for you to live in the present and most of the times you will torn be between the past and present. It in fact makes it difficult for you to make a decision in the present relation or stops you from moving on in life. One needs to take a look at the present or future a rather than living the past, as it might hamper the good things awaiting for you round the corner and you need to let go the old to make a fresh beginning.
